Surrender

HFH Productions has unveiled its upcoming play,ย โ€œSurrender,โ€ย byย Sophie Swithinbank.ย

It will premiere at the Arcola Theatre in London from June 19 to July 13 and then head to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at Summerhall from August 1 to 26.ย

This announcement follows Swithinbankโ€™s previous collaboration withย Hannah Farley-Hillsย on the successful playย โ€œBacon,โ€ which wasโ€ showcased at the Fringe last year.

Nancy Medina, Artistic Director of Bristol Old Vic, will associate directย Phoebe Ladenburgย in this one-woman play.ย

The creative team featuresย Movement Director Jess Tucker Boyd,ย Sound Designer Dominic Brennan,ย Lighting Designer Stacey Nurse, andย Costume Designer Pam Tait.

Hannah Farley-Hills, Executive Producer of HFH Productions, expressed her excitement:ย

โ€œI am delighted to be presenting Sophieโ€™s next show and working with Phoebe and Nancy.ย Surrenderย is a powerful story that asks bold questions about what society asks of women.ย Iย am proud and excited to showcase it to the world.โ€

Plot Summary

โ€œSurrenderโ€ย explores the strained relationship between a mother and her daughter, who hasย been estrangedย for 13 years.ย

The daughter visits her mother in prison, and they have just one hour to reconnect.ย

The charming yet unreliable mother shares her version of events, revealing the valid reason for her imprisonment.ย

The play delves into themes of social care, mistakes, and the struggles of retaining oneโ€™s identity under oppressive circumstances.ย

Inspired by the dynamics in Shakespeareโ€™sย โ€œThe Taming of the Shrewโ€,ย โ€œSurrenderโ€ย challenges expectations of submission within motherhood.
